1. With 1% of World’s Vehicles, India accounts for 11% of Global deaths in Road Accidents: World Bank report

According to the report ‘Traffic Crash Injuries and Disabilities:The Burden on Indian Society’ released by the World Bank with 1% of World’s vehicles, India accounts for 11% of Global Road Accident deaths & 6% of total road crashes.

i. In India, annually around 4.5 Lakh road crashes take place out of which 1.5 Lakh people die.

ii.The World Bank report was prepared in association with Save LIFE Foundation (SLF).

• According to WHO, India topped the world in road crash deaths with more than 400 fatalities per day and witnesses 53 road crashes every hour.

• In the last decade (2011-20), road crashes were the cause of death of 1.3 million people & has injured around 5 million in India.

• 76.2% of people who are killed in road crashes are in the prime working-age i.e 18-45 years.

• The report puts the total value of Crash costs due to accidents at INR 5.96 Lakh Crore or 3.14% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

iii. Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs) is the 8th leading cause of death globally.

iv. Male road-users of working age (18-45) represent the category of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in India.They are prone to large number of road crashes & account for more than half of all road crash deaths & serious injuries in India.

1. Indian Navy gets third Scorpene submarine, to be commissioned as INS Karanj

 

The Indian Navy got its third Scorpene submarine, which will be commissioned as INS Karanj, of Project P-75 in Mumbai.

• With the delivery of Karanj, India further cemented its position as a submarine building nation.

• MDL, one of the India's leading shipyards with the capacity and the capability to meet the requirements and aspirations of the Indian Navy, has delivered three Scorpene submarines named Khanderi, Kalvari and now Karanj.

• The fourth submarine, Vela, launched on May 6 2019, has commenced sea trials, the fifth submarine Vagir, was launched on November 12, 2020 and has commenced harbour sea trials whilst the sixth submarine is presently in an advanced stage of outfitting.

• All the six submarines are being constructed under Project 75.


2. Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to feature India’s 1st & Asia’s largest 12 Km Wildlife Protection Corridor

i. The upcoming 210 kilometres long Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Economic corridor) is all set to become India’s first highway with 12 km long elevated corridor for the protection of wildlife as it will pass through pristine forest areas. It will also be Asia’s largest wildlife corridor.

ii. The project will be executed under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

iii. Notably, this expressway will reduce the distance between the two cities from 235 km to 210 km, and travel time from the current 6.5 hours to just 2.5 hours i.e reduction of 4 hours.

3. Tribal painter Bhuri Bai of MP invited as Chief Guest at Foundation Day celebrations of Bharat Bhavan

The tribal painter Bhuri Bai of Madhya Pradesh was invited as the Chief Guest at the Foundation Day celebrations of Bharat Bhavan.

• When the construction of this building started, she used to work here as a labourer on a daily wage of Rs six. She never expected that she would become the Chief Guest in this Bharat Bhavan.

• Bhuri Bai, also awarded Padma Shri, is a Master of Tribal Painting Art.

• Bharat Bhavan is an autonomous multi-arts complex and museum in Bhopal


4. Byculla zoo in Mumbai reopens after almost a year

Almost a year after shutting its gates for visitors due to COVID-19 pandemic, Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, popularly known as Byculla zoo, in Mumbai reopened.

• The zoo, which houses a variety of animals ranging from deer and monkeys to elephants and a hippopotamus besides birds, was closed to the public on 15th of March last year.

• The BMC It has appealed to senior citizens, pregnant women and children under the age of five years to avoid visiting the zoo.

• It is the oldest public garden in Mumbai. After Indian independence it was Named after Jijamata, the mother of Shivaji, the first Maratha emperor.


5. UP govt starts training programme for aspirants of various competitive exams under 'Abhyudaya Yojana'

In Uttar Pradesh, the State Government has started a training programme for aspirants of various competitive examinations under 'Abhyudaya Yojana'.

• Under the scheme, free of cost training will be provided to the candidates who are preparing for various competitive examinations.

• More than five lakh candidates have done their registration and 50 thousand aspirants have been selected for training in the first phase.

• Under the Abhyuday Coaching Scheme candidates will get high-level guidance regarding examination and interview by skilled mentors including IAS, IPS, IFS, PCS, PPS and other state-level officers.

• Retired officers would also be called for the training of aspirants for better management.


6. Mamata Banerjee launches scheme to provide meal at Rs 5 to poor people

Ahead of the assembly election in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee virtually launched the 'Maa' scheme under which her government would provide a meal at a nominal cost of Rs 5 to poor people.

• They will get a platter of rice, dal, a vegetable and egg curry for Rs 5, adding that the state government will bear a subsidy of Rs 15 per plate.

• Self-help groups will operate the kitchens from 1 pm to 3 pm every day and such kitchens will be set up everywhere in the state gradually.




1. RBI constitutes eight-member expert panel for strengthening Urban Co-operative Banks

 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted an eight-member expert committee on Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs) to examine issues and suggest a road map for strengthening the sector.

• The committee will be chaired by the former RBI Deputy Governor N. S. Vishwanathan.

• The committee will assess the regulatory measures taken by the RBI and other authorities in respect of UCBs and their impact over the last five years to identify key constraints and enablers in fulfillment of their socio-economic objective.

• It will also suggest effective measures for faster rehabilitation and resolution of UCBs and assess potential for consolidation in the sector


2. ISA announces Dr Ajay Mathur as its new Director-General

International Solar Alliance (ISA) has announced Dr. Ajay Mathur as its new Director General following his election at the first special assembly of ISA members.

• A coalition of 73 member countries, ISA was established in 2015 to accelerate the demand for and use of safe, sustainable, and affordable solar energy for all.

• Dr Mathur replaces Mr Upendra Tripathy, who has served as Director General since the inception of the ISA.
