1. Facebook blocks Australian users from sharing or viewing news content
Facebook has blocked
Australian users from sharing or viewing news content on the platform, causing
alarm over public access to key information.
• Several government health,
emergency and other pages were also blocked. Later the tech giant asserted it
was a mistake.
• Those outside of Australia
are also unable to read or access any Australian news publications on the
platform.
• Facebook's move is in
response to a proposed law in Australia which would make tech giants pay for
news content.
• Companies like Google and Facebook have argued the law doesn't reflect how the internet works, and unfairly ‘penalises’ their platforms.
1. Pariksha Pe Charcha-2021 to be held online next month
Union Education Minister
Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has announced that the fourth edition of Prime
Minister’s Interaction Programme with school students, teachers and parents -
Pariksha Pe Charcha will be held next month.
• The registration process
for the forthcoming 'Pariksha Pe Charcha' programme has begun which will be
open till 14th of March.
• This time the programme
will be held virtually.
• The first edition of
Pariksha pe Charcha was in 2018

2. The Third India-Australia-Japan-USA QUAD Foreign Minister's Meeting will be held with the participation of the respective Foreign Ministers.
• The QUAD meeting provides
an opportunity to continue the useful exchange of views from their last meeting
in Tokyo in October last year.
• The Ministers will
exchange views on regional and global issues especially practical areas of
cooperation towards maintaining a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
• They will also discuss ongoing efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing global climate change and other issues of mutual interest.
3. PM Modi launches ‘Mahabahu-Brahmaputra’ initiative and several development projects in Assam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
launched the Mahabahu-Brahmaputra, lay the foundation stone of Dhubri-Phulbari
Bridge and perform Bhoomi Poojan for construction of Majuli Bridge Assam.
• The launch of
Mahabahu-Brahmaputra will be marked by the inauguration of the Ro-Pax vessel
operations between Neamatighat and Majuli, North and South Guwahati and
Dhubri-Hatsingimari .
• The Ro-Pax services will
help in reducing the travel time by providing connectivity between banks and
thus reducing the distance to be travelled by road.
• The Prime Minister will
lay the foundation stone of the longest river bridge of the country over the
Brahmaputra between Dhubri in Assam and Phulbari in Meghalaya.
• The 19 kilometer long 4
lane bridge will reduce the distance of 205 kilometer to be travelled by road
to 19 kilometer only.
• The Prime Minister will perform bhumi pujan for the much awaited 8 km long Jorhat - Majuli bridge. This bridge will connect river island Majuli with mainland Assam
4. India host workshop on ‘COVID-19 Management: Experience, Good Practices and Way Forward’
India hosted a workshop on
‘COVID-19 Management: Experience, Good Practices and Way Forward’.
• Ten countries - India,
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan,
Seychelles and Sri Lanka will participate.
• The Health Secretary of
India will chair the event.
• Each country has been invited to participate in one plus one format - health secretary and Head of their Technical Team in charge of COVID management.
5. Home Minister Amit Shah paid tributes to Ramakrishna Paramhansa on his Birth Anniversary.
• Ramakrishna Paramhansa was
one of the leading Hindu spiritual leaders in the 19th century.
• He was born Gadadhar
Chattopadhyay on February 18, 1836, in Kamarpukur, in Hooghly district of West
Bengal.
• He emphasised that the
realization of the existence of God is the supreme goal of all living beings.
For him, various religions were only a means to reach the Absolute.
• Among his most famous
disciples was Swami Vivekananda, who became famous across the world in his own
right.

6. ‘Free Gift Milk to Girl Students of Sikkim’ initiative to benefit around 1,500 students
Sikkim Chief Minister P. S.
Tamang launched the ‘Free Gift Milk to Girl Students of Sikkim’ initiative at
Gangtok last week.
• The initiative will
benefit around 1,500 students who would
be provided 200 mls of milk every day.
• Mr Tamang called the initiative a step towards eradicating malnutrition and other health problems among the young generation.
7. Kerala launches fibre optic network to provide free internet to 20 lakh families
To bridge the digital divide
by providing high-speed, affordable internet connectivity to every household,
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the KFON (Kerala Fibre Optic
Network) in the state.
• With KFON, free internet
connectivity will be provided to 20 lakh BPL families.
• It will also cover
villages in all 14 districts.
• Earlier only 10% of
government offices had high-speed Internet, with the launch of KFON, 30,000
government institutions will have high brand width connectivity.
• KFON is a joint venture of Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). A consortium led by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was selected to implement the project in March 2019.
1. ICICI Lombard partners with Flipkart to offer ‘Hospicash’ insurance
The e-commerce company
Flipkart has partnered with ICICI Lombard to offer its customers the ‘Group
SafeGuard’ insurance, a group health insurance policy.
• The ‘Group SafeGuard’
comes with a daily cash benefits starting from Rs 500, and ‘Hospicash’ benefit
for Flipkart consumers.
• The product will allow
consumers to avail a payout for each day of hospitalisation.
• The fixed daily amount
will enable consumers to pay for incidental medical or emergency expenses.
• The insurance is
affordably priced, paperless, and flexible; covering both accidental
hospitalisations or planned surgeries/treatment.
HCL Tech signs MoU with IIT-K for cyber security
2. HCL Technologies (HCL) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) to collaborate in the area of cyber security.
• As part of the MoU, HCL
will work with C3iHub, a specialised cyber security research centre at IITK.
• This collaboration will
bring together the country’s brightest minds, advanced research capabilities
and global resources to develop cutting-edge solutions in the area of cyber security.
• HCL and IITK will bring in
real-world industry exposure to carry out joint initiatives and research.
• HCL will also work with IITK to identify selective research projects to bring them to scale.
