1. Ghana becomes 1st country to receive Corona virus vaccines through Covax vaccine-sharing initiative 

The western African country Ghana has become the first country to receive Corona virus vaccines through the Covax vaccine-sharing initiative.

• Around six lakhs doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University and produced by the Serum Institute of India arrived in Ghana's Capital Accra.

• Covax is aiming to deliver about two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines globally by the end of the year.

• The World Health Organization (WHO) led COVAX programme aims to deliver tools to fight the coronavirus pandemic to 92 low and medium-income nations.


1. Centre Launches National Urban Digital Mission to create Digital Infra for Cities

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad launched the National Urban Digital Mission’ (NUDM).

• The aim of this program is to create a digital infrastructure for cities in India.

• The NUDM has been launched jointly by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs along with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

• The mission aims to put in place a “citizen-centric” and “ecosystem-driven” approach to ‘urban governance and service delivery’ in cities by 2022, and across all cities and towns by 2024.

• The mission has three pillars – people, process, and platform.

2. Prakash Javadekar uses Sanskrit for first time at UNSC on climate change 

Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on used Sanskrit for the first time in United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Debate on climate change.

• Starting his UNSC debate on climate change, Javadekar addressed other dignitaries with the Sanskrit hymn from Sukla Yajurveda.

• The Union Minister stated that India is the only country on track among the G20 nations to meet its climate change mitigation commitments.

3. Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill passed

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed by voice vote a bill aimed at curbing religious conversions by fraudulent or any other undue means, including through marriage.

• The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill, 2021 seeks to replace the ordinance promulgated in November 2020 that provides for imprisonment up to 10 years and a maximum fine of Rs 50,000 for violators.

• Under the bill, a marriage will be declared “null and void” if the conversion is solely for that purpose, and those wishing to change their religion after marriage need to apply to the district magistrate.

4. UP receives award for fastest implementation of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana 

Uttar Pradesh received award for fastest implementation of Pradhan mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.

• More than 27110 crores has been transferred in the accounts of the farmers of state under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi yojna.

• Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare,  Narendra Singh Tomar awarded the top-performing States and Districts for their exemplary work with respect to the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme.

• Uttar Pradesh has been awarded in the category of fastest take off in year 2020-21.

5. Karnataka to set up a Flower Processing Centre to add value to its flower power

 

The Karnataka State Horticulture Department is setting up a “Flower Processing Centre”, in collaboration with the International Flower Auction Bangalore (IFAB), to convert unsold flowers into various useful products.

• The incubation centre will process flowers and convert them to value-added products such as natural dyes, floral papers, incense sticks, flower petal powder for cosmetic usage, floral embedded works, floral arts, and silica-stored flowers.

• The facility will provide support to the flower farmers who suffer huge losses whenever there is a glut or market disruption. Growers can learn the art of flower processing from the centre.


1. Fino Payments Bank Upgraded To Scheduled Commercial Bank Status 

Fino Payments Bank has been designated as a bank in the Second Schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

• By categorising Fino in the second schedule of the RBI Act, the payments bank now has a scheduled commercial bank status giving it the powers to expand its treasury operations and access to liquidity windows.

• Fino is one of the only successful payments banks in the country, having broken even in the first-half of this fiscal while other payment banks continue to report losses.

• For the June to September 2020 quarter, the bank posted its second consecutive net profit at Rs 1.9 crore compared to a net loss of Rs 10.9 crore during the same period a year ago.

• The commercial bank status effectively gives Fino access to government business, it can become a member of a clearing house, in addition to the RBI’s liquidity window.


1. Former Union Minister Vijay Sampla takes charge as Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes


Shri Vijay Sampla assumed charge as the new Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) on February 24, 2021.

• Sampla has been the former Union Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment from 2014 to 2019.

• NCSC is an Indian constitutional body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, that works for the socio-economic development of the scheduled castes and to prevent atrocities against them.


1. IOC President says weightlifting could be removed from Olympic programme by 2024

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has said that weightlifting could be removed from the Olympic programme by 2024, if the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) fails to implement reforms in the fight against doping.

• The IWF has been hit by doping scandals and accusations of corruption in recent years.

• Last October, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) said that 18 weightlifters from six countries were suspected of supplying false urine samples.

• The International Weightlifting Federation, headquartered in Budapest, is the international governing body for the sport of Olympic weightlifting.

2. IOC names Brisbane as preferred bidder to host 2032 Olympic Games

 

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has named Brisbane, Australia as the preferred bidder to host the 2032 Olympic Games.

• The state of Queensland had hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Brisbane was praised for its high percentage of existing venues, a good masterplan, experience in organising major events and its favourable weather.

• Several cities and countries had expressed an interest in hosting the Games, including Indonesia, Budapest, China, Doha and Germany's Ruhr Valley.

• The delayed 2020 Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan in the summer, with Paris in France staging the 2024 Games and Los Angeles in the United States hosting the 2028 Olympics.
